Financial Update

News from the Vice Chair for Finance is rarely glamorous or exciting, nevertheless here's the latest on SIGCHI's finances.

As many of you know, our conference finances need an overhaul. We have had a system that has served us well when conferences were steadily generating surplus proceeds over their costs. But now our conferences are barely breaking even or losing money, and ACM is changing its formulas for the allocations we return and the reserve funds we must maintain. So it is time to re-think our approach.

Joseph Konstan has just put together a task force to consider conference finances and draft a policy that reflects our new situation. We hope to provide consistent guidance to the conferences on what funds conferences should return, and avoid mid-course corrections once planning begins for a conference. We may also develop different policies for handling of the CHI conference compared to our other, specialized conferences, and for conferences we co-sponsor.

The group consists of Joseph Konstan, Ian McClelland, me, and Dennis Wixon as chair -- and we'd welcome your input and suggestions. You can find our email addresses on
